In 1577 it became forbidden to slaughter animals in the city center due to the fear of diseases spreading and due to the bad smells. The butchers therefore moved in 1671 outside of Vesteport, where they twice a week had a horse and cattle market. The market was meant to control that charges were paid for the animals that were slaughtered and brought into town. As a signal of the market opening, a drum was hit, which is the story behind the name of the street Trommesalen which in English is translated to Drumhall. Later the market was moved to the well known meat-packing district next to Kalveboderne.
